Wednesday, August 5th - 10 Days until Departure - Packing up Elisabeth's and Kate's Rooms

I spent the afternoon today packing up Elisabeth's and Kate's rooms. It is hard to imagine so many memories in one room. I had three boxes for each room: one for bedding, one for toys, and one for books. I had tears in my eyes uncovering six years of toys, puzzles, and stuffed animals.

Elisabeth had divided her stuffed animals into two groups: the first to bring with her to Brussels and the second to send to the storage unit in Virginia. I found Elisabeth's first stuffed grey elephant, Elle, in the latter pile. I was so sad. Rich and I received the elephant as a shower gift from Mrs. Phyllis Kramer, one of my grandmother's best friends, in Dayton, Ohio. It was a special shower and a special gift - all of my aunts and great aunts were there, as well as my cousins and friends from childhood. I remember opening the stuffed elephant and feeling so touched that Mrs. Kramer had thought of me. I found a special place for it in Elisabeth's first nursery in Virginia. Elle has had a place of honor in the nursery ever since. I'll put it in the Brussels box and hopefully we'll find a special place for Elle in Belgium too.

In Kate's room I encountered similar memories: Kate's first baby blanket crocheted by her grandmother, Gretchen Snyder; the embroidered pillow from Gammy's dear friend, Eleanor Geiger, from Lima, Peru; the green painted ceramic box with the yellow flower my mother, Patricia Keyes, painted when she was a girl. There were so many happy memories in Kate's room. It was difficult for me to take her room apart.

Kate was home today when I was packing - it was somewhat traumatic for her, especially when I packed her comforter, pillows and blankets. She looked crestfallen. To make things better I took her to the playroom to pick a "new comforter" from the quilts my grandmother, Lucina Rauh, and great aunt, Anna Marie Diller, had made a century earlier. I unzipped the container where they were stored and let Kate peek inside. There were about quilts that my mother passed on to me. Kate picked the pink quilt. She loves PINK - her new favorite color! We put it on her bed together and tucked it in. She was quite helpful! I put her to bed underneath her quilt tonight. I wonder if I slept underneath the same quilts in the North room at my Granny Rauh's. I probably did. Let's hope she doesn't wet her bed...

Sunday, August 2, 2009 - 13 days Before Departure

We just put the girls to sleep.  Kate said that her twin bed was too big for her.  "Look at my feet, Mommy.  The bed is too long!"  I decided that it was not the time to tell her she would sleep in a Euro King size bed in Brussels.  Poor Kate!

Elisabeth just read Chapter V of Mr. Popper's Penguins.  Rich promised to take her to the office with him tomorrow morning if she read an entire chapter.  She did it!  She is so excited! We're planning to pack a lot of books for her to read while in Brussels.

Yesterday, we went swimming at Poplar Heights.  Elisabeth went off the diving board anddown the tunnel slide for the first time.  She had such a great time going off the boards and slide with her Dad and Michael.  Elisabeth even did a cannonball!  What a splash!

We are busy packing for Brussels.  We asked the girls to pack two toys or games in the family room.  The entire train table is covered with toys and games.  The pile is three times the size of the box.  Somehow we need to manage our packing.  But how?  I can't imagine life without a kids size kitchen, cash register, and doll house.  In some way they are my toys too!

We also packed a box of books and Elisabeth's room.  We told the girls to pack 10 books each. When I checked the box afterwards none of the French books Santa brought made it into the box.  I snuck them into the box (Rich and I each can pick 10 books too.)  Let's hope French becomes more of a front seat in Brussels.

We also asked Elisabeth to pack a box for her room.  It is a dumping ground for anything and everything:  pencil boxes, music boxes, piggy banks, American Girl doll (bed and outfits too!), etc.  While she is at her grandparents this week I will repack it and purge.  Too much stuff!

Kate is three and a half and still potty training.  Maybe one accident every couple of days.  The other day I checked on her in the half bath and somehow she managed to poop all over the wall in the bathroom.  Our green powder room had turned chocolate brown.  The silver lining was that her bottom was clean when I tried to wipe her.  I suppose it was an explosive poop.
